Equinor ASA (EQNR) and its partners have adjusted their plans for the Troll West Electrification (TWEL) project, opting to forgo the installation of a second electric export compressor on the Troll C platform. This decision prioritizes uninterrupted gas supplies to Europe while maintaining significant emissions reductions already achieved. The original 2021 plan included the compressor, but its installation would have required extensive modifications and reduced output for up to 21 months.
The revised approach ensures that Troll C continues to operate at maximum capacity, a level it has sustained since 2023. This adjustment is expected to provide approximately 2.3 billion standard cubic meters of additional natural gas to Europe during 2027 and 2028, enough to supply one million households for two years. The move underscores Equinor's focus on production reliability, capital discipline, and value creation.
Despite the change, the TWEL project has already reduced annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the Troll area by about 330,000 tons, achieving roughly 75% of the 440,000 tons of annual reductions envisioned in the original plan. The decision also frees up about 26 megawatts (MW) of reserved power capacity at Kollsnes for other uses, supporting more efficient capital allocation.
The decision benefits Equinor's partners, including Shell plc (SHEL), TotalEnergies (TTE), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Petoro AS, who hold significant interests in the field. Stable gas production helps protect their exposure to Norwegian gas supplies while avoiding prolonged operational disruptions. For investors, the move reinforces Equinor's commitment to maximizing value from existing assets while maintaining reliable energy supplies to Europe.
