EU Gas Supply Crisis Deepens Amid High Prices and Low Storage
The European Union is facing a gas supply crisis due to high prices and low storage levels. The bloc's energy commissioner, Dan Jørgensen, warned that Europe's gas storage facilities are only 70% full, with prices on the Dutch benchmark TTF exceeding €70 per megawatt-hour for weeks.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, affecting global LNG markets, and an exceptionally dry summer has put pressure on several member states' electricity systems. Jørgensen urged national energy ministers to consider reducing gas demand amid this crisis.
In a letter sent to ministers, he suggested measures such as limiting public heating and lighting to reduce gas-for-power demand. However, he emphasized that there are currently no immediate risks to security of supply.
