EU Pressure Grows as Drought Devastates Central European Crops

A severe drought in Central Europe has left its mark on the region's agricultural sector. Countries such as Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, and Croatia have reported significant crop losses, prompting them to call on the European Union (EU) for increased support.

In Slovakia, up to 90% of the country was affected by drought, with wheat and barley crops bearing the brunt. Corn production in some areas fell by as much as 40%. The situation is even more dire in Slovenia, where grain yields dropped by up to 50% and corn yields by 80-90%.

Poland has also reported drought-related losses, with bean crops damaged in the east of the country and orchards affected. The countries are urging the EU to bolster its agricultural reserve and provide more flexibility in using Common Agricultural Policy instruments and state aid.
