Europe Braces for Gas Shortage as Qatar Halts LNG Deliveries
QatarEnergy's decision to suspend liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments to Edison, one of its biggest European clients, has significant implications for Europe's gas supply. The suspension began in April due to disruptions caused by the US-Iran war, triggering a force majeure notification.
Edison, an Italian utility company, holds a long-term contract with QatarEnergy for the supply of 6.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, covering about 10% of Italy's total consumption. The contract has been in effect since 2009 and will last for 25 years.
As a result of the suspension, Edison has already replaced 23 of the 35 undelivered Qatari LNG cargoes by turning to US suppliers. Europe's gas storage levels remain historically low, with EU-wide storage at around 69% in mid-September and Germany below 56%. The pressure is mounting for alternative LNG sources before winter.
