Europe Braces for Winter as Natural Gas Supplies Remain Tethered
The International Gas Union (IGU) predicts that natural gas supplies will remain limited until next summer, potentially suffocating Europe's energy needs.
The continent is entering its heating season with the lowest gas reserves in over a decade, exacerbated by Qatar's suspension of sales to the EU and Asia due to the Gulf War. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Gulf is only at 15-25% of pre-war levels, according to Goldman Sachs.
This has driven European gas prices to an all-time high of €80 per megawatt-hour (MWh), a 17% increase over the past month. The IGU's Menelaos Idreos warns that Europe is already 'overpaying' Asia for gas, which could have long-term implications.
The crisis has sparked concerns about the reliability of natural gas supplies in the coming winter months. Ana Maria Jaler-Makarevich from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) warns that if the winter is cold, 'we could have serious problems'.
