Europe Relents on Diesel Reserve Release Amid US Pressure
US President Donald Trump has successfully pressured European leaders to release their diesel reserves ahead of the midterm elections. The move comes after days of pressure from the US administration, which warned that a ban on US diesel exports would severely impact Europe's economy.
The G7 nations agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil over four months, with a substantial portion released within the first 20 days. This includes diesel from European countries' emergency stockpiles.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright urged European countries to release their diesel reserves, stating that 'this is a time for a coordinated release of diesel stores as we go into harvest season, and we go into winter heating oil season.'
The decision was made after the US threatened to ban exports of diesel to Europe, which would have left the continent vulnerable to supply disruptions. The G7 nations are required to hold oil stocks equal to 90 days of net imports.
