Food Prices Hit Four-Year High Amid Logistics Disruptions and Weather Concerns
Global food prices have reached their highest level in nearly four years due to logistical disruptions and weather concerns, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The FAO's Food Price Index rose to 136.0 points in September, up from a revised 134.0 in August, marking its highest reading since November 2022.
International sugar prices have surged to an 18-month high due to fears of a severe El Nino weather pattern, while wheat futures reached a three-year peak early last month due to the war-related collapse in Black Sea trade.
The FAO's Chief Economist Maximo Torero warned that these pressures will soon be passed on to consumer food prices, particularly in countries dependent on imports for food and energy.
