Europe Teeters on Energy Cliff as Gas Prices Soar Amid Iran Conflict
European natural gas prices have skyrocketed to an unprecedented high of 80 euros per MWh, more than doubling since the outbreak of the Middle East conflict. The EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen sounded a stark warning about an impending energy crisis, exacerbated by the Iran conflict.
The current gas storage level stands at approximately 70%, which is 12 percentage points lower compared to the same period last year. This precarious situation has left European nations struggling to replenish their storage facilities.
Commissioner Jørgensen highlighted the link between the geopolitical backdrop of the Iran conflict and the energy crisis, emphasizing that Europe relies on imports for approximately 80% of its gas demand. The potential blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route through which roughly 20% of the world's oil and natural gas passes, is intensifying the crisis.
