European Gas Prices Fall Amid Hopes for Hormuz Deal
European gas prices fell nearly 5% on Friday as hopes grew for an interim US-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ease disruptions along the vital shipping route. The decline came after a sharp rise in prices the previous session, with European natural gas prices falling 4.92% to €71.25 per megawatt-hour.
The possible interim agreement between Washington and Tehran aims to lift the US blockade on Iran, which has disrupted the region for nearly seven months. The Strait of Hormuz is a key point of contention in efforts to end the conflict. Despite the decline, natural gas supplies remain under pressure due to disruptions in liquefied natural gas flows from the Gulf region.
The supply constraints have intensified competition between Europe and Asia for limited LNG cargoes, while European countries are seeking to rebuild gas inventories ahead of the winter heating season. European gas storage facilities are currently slightly more than 70% full, a level below both the seasonal average and the region's target.
