European Gas Prices Rebound Amid Winter Storage Woes
European natural gas prices rebounded on Friday, rising above €77/MWh after three consecutive sessions of losses. This increase follows a tumultuous year for European gas markets, with prices nearly tripling since the beginning of the year.
The current low storage levels are a major concern, as they stand at around 68% full - well below seasonal averages and the EU's target of 80% capacity by December. The depletion of reserves is attributed to several factors, including record summer heatwaves that hindered efforts to rebuild inventories.
Additionally, disruptions to LNG shipments from the Persian Gulf, resulting from the US-Iran war, have further exacerbated the situation. As winter approaches, strong demand from Asia and other buyers could drive more intense competition for LNG cargoes, leaving Europe more exposed to price spikes.
