Europe's €3.2 Billion Grain Loss Sparks Global Food Price Worries
A recent report by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) estimates that Europe has suffered a significant grain loss due to extreme weather conditions. The total estimated value of the loss is €3.2 billion, with France being the hardest hit at €1.47 billion for 5.8 million tonnes.
The heatwave affected kernel filling in wheat and disrupted maize pollination, resulting in a reduction in maize acreage. This production shock comes as weather conditions continued to deteriorate through July and August, pushing the estimated economic loss above an earlier assessment of €1.8 billion.
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre has also reported that soybean yields were down 15%, potatoes by 7%, and sugar beet by 11% due to the summer's impact.
