Europe's Natural Gas Prices Soar Amid Ongoing Strait of Hormuz Disruptions
Natural gas prices in Europe have been surging to multi-year highs, raising concerns about energy costs and low storage levels in Germany.
The Dutch TTF front-month futures, a benchmark for European gas, were trading at around 80 euros (92 U.S. dollars) per megawatt-hour on Wednesday, slightly down from the highest level of around 83 euros (95.5 dollars) on Monday since December 2022.
Germany's natural gas storage inventory was only about 56% full in September, the lowest level ever recorded for this month since tracking began in 2011, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has added pressure to an energy system that has undergone significant changes since the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted in 2022 and Germany shifted away from Russian energy supplies.
