Europe's Winter Energy Woes: Wholesale Electricity Costs Soar to €180 per MWh
Europe is bracing for another winter of high energy prices as wholesale electricity costs soar. In Germany, the price of wholesale electricity for delivery in January 2027 has exceeded €180 per MWh, a staggering increase of over 60% compared to last year.
The main driver behind this surge is the rising cost of natural gas, which accounts for a significant portion of Europe's energy mix. The growing competition for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is also putting pressure on prices as countries scramble to replenish their stocks ahead of winter.
Tensions in the Middle East have disrupted LNG shipments from Qatar, exacerbating the global market's supply woes and pushing up costs even further.
Weather will play a critical role in determining energy prices over the coming months. A cold winter combined with reduced wind and solar power generation could force Europe to rely more heavily on gas and coal, potentially driving wholesale electricity prices up by as much as 50%, according to estimates cited by Bloomberg.
