ExxonMobil Commits Billions to Mozambique Gas Project Amid Regional Stability Concerns
ExxonMobil has made significant progress in its Mozambique gas project, awarding $1.1 billion worth of pre-investment contracts for critical equipment in the first phase of development.
The Rovuma liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, located in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province, has been paused due to security concerns since 2021, but ExxonMobil lifted force majeure on the project last November.
Mozambican economist Salvador Raisse notes that while the equipment deals demonstrate strong commercial backing from international operators, realizing the project's full potential depends on maintaining regional stability and ensuring indigenous Mozambique businesses participate in the supply chain.
