FAO Food Price Index Rises on Sugar, Grain Price Hikes
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported a 1.5% increase in the FAO Food Price Index for September, driven by rising sugar prices.
Sugar led the way with a 6.1% price hike, its third consecutive monthly rise, and the highest level since April 2025. The main contributor to this increase is forecasted global sugar supply reduction during the 2026-27 marketing year due to reduced sown areas and adverse weather conditions in the European Union.
The FAO Cereal Price Index also rose by 5.1%, primarily due to logistical challenges in the Black Sea region, which led importers to switch to alternative suppliers. Additionally, dry weather conditions in North America's key wheat-growing regions contributed to the price increase.
