Farmers Threaten Wheat Sowing Boycott Over Support Price Delay

Pakistan's farmers are pressing the government for a minimum wheat support price of Rs. 5,000 per 40 kilograms to ensure they can recover their production costs.

Khalid Khokhar, president of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, warned that if the government delays announcing its crop policy, farmers may skip sowing wheat next season.

Farmers are struggling with high input costs and inadequate returns from their produce. Khokhar pointed out that DAP consumption has fallen by 1.14 million tonnes since 2019-20.

Khokhar also highlighted the sugarcane sector's growth, with cultivation increasing by 16% to 2.454 million acres this season. He urged the government to maintain sufficient sugar stocks for domestic consumption until November and export the surplus to prevent losses for growers.
