Futures for Canada's main stock index, the TSX, dipped on Wednesday as precious metals prices slid. The TSX had leaped 323.06 points to close Tuesday at 36,332.28.

President Donald Trump said talks with Iran in New York made progress but threatened to 'annihilate' the country if a deal was not reached. This uncertainty weighed on oil and metal prices, with Brent futures for November delivery trading around $99.60 a barrel, down 0.4% from earlier losses.

On the economic front, Statistics Canada reported that new housing prices fell 0.1% in August, matching July's decline. Among single stocks, CIBC downgraded its rating on silver miner Endeavour Silver to 'neutral' from 'outperformer'.
