Farmers in Firozpur, Punjab, are expanding their chilli exports to Dubai after a successful trial shipment earlier this year. Following the export of 15 tonnes of green chillies in April 2026, the Saragarhi Farmer Producer Company Ltd has signed a contract to export 700 tonnes this season. The farmers have increased cultivation from 20 acres last year to 60 acres this year, with an expected yield of 120 quintals per acre, generating a return of Rs 2.68 lakh per acre, significantly higher than wheat.
The Gauri variety of chillies is being cultivated, with the export contract secured at Rs 29 per kg. Balwinder Singh, president of Saragarhi company, noted that favourable weather could further boost yields to 150-200 quintals per acre. The farmers are also helping others understand the production practices and quality protocols required for overseas markets.
Despite challenges like container shortages due to the West Asia war, the export company sold the remaining produce domestically last year but paid the agreed export price. This year, the farmers aim to hand over 700 tonnes, with the company committed to purchasing the agreed amount. The initiative has connected around 50 additional farmers, supported by the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) team.
Punjab produces around 294,915 metric tonnes of green chillies annually, with Firozpur being a leading district. Singh highlighted the need for government support and local processing infrastructure to capture more value. The AIF team has also identified other potential clusters for different crops in Punjab, aiming to help farmers diversify beyond wheat and paddy cultivation.
