Fitch Downgrades Qatar's Outlook Amid Ongoing LNG Disruptions
Fitch Ratings has maintained Qatar's Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'AA', but shifted its outlook to Negative. The move reflects concerns over prolonged disruptions in LNG exports, which have impacted the country's sovereign balance sheet.
The rating agency expects LNG exports to resume by the first quarter of 2027, but notes that it may take six months for production to reach pre-war levels. Qatar's economy is heavily reliant on hydrocarbon exports, and Fitch estimates that the current disruption could lead to a widening fiscal deficit in 2026.
The country's sovereign assets are significant, with net foreign assets projected at 254.2% of GDP by the end of 2026. However, Fitch warns that a further deterioration in geopolitical risks or a decline in energy revenues could undermine Qatar's credit profile.
