US Strikes Iranian Oil Tankers Amid Escalating Confrontations
The US and Iran have engaged in a series of escalating military confrontations, with American forces striking three Iranian crude oil carriers in response to Iranian ballistic missile attacks on two US Navy warships. The latest strikes come just a day after President Donald Trump downplayed the conflict, describing it as 'small potatoes' and 'not a big thing'.
The US Central Command reported that no American personnel were injured during the Iranian attacks on September 5, but the USS Philippine Sea and the USS Winston S. Churchill 'successfully evaded' the incoming missiles.
According to Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, the US strikes targeted three Iranian crude oil carriers, permanently disabling one off Kharg Island and another near the coastal city of Jask, while completely destroying an unladen carrier in the Gulf of Oman.
The conflict has resulted in 18 US service member casualties and nearly 800 injuries over six months, prompting Vice President JD Vance to push back on using the term 'war' to describe the situation.
