Food Price Index Hits Record High Amid Global Disruptions
The FAO food price index reached 136 points in September, marking an annual rise of 5.8% and a monthly increase of 1.5%. The surge was attributed to logistical issues, trade tensions, and adverse weather phenomena.
The Strait of Hormuz and Black Sea disruptions contributed to uncertainty about transportation and energy costs. Climate events also reduced crop production prospects in some regions.
Cereals bore the brunt of price increases, with a 5.1% rise in September and a 17.2% increase over last year's record. Wheat prices rose by 6.3%, while corn advanced by 5.6%.
