Ford Pledges Public Funding for $40B Canadian Oil Pipeline
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced that his government is willing to use taxpayer dollars to fund the construction of the Northern Shield Energy Corridor pipeline. This $40-$50 billion project aims to transport oil from Alberta to Ontario within four and a half years.
The proposed pipeline would span 3,300 kilometers between Hardisty, Alta., and Sarnia, Ont., all on Canadian territory. Ford drew comparisons with historical projects, such as the construction of the railroad by John A. MacDonald before confederation, which took around four and a half years to complete.
Ford emphasized that his government is prepared to provide 'patient capital' needed to invest in the pipeline project. This move has raised concerns among experts about the need for the eastbound pipeline and the use of public money to fund it.
