Ford Reaffirms Support for Northern Shield Pipeline Amid Calls for Government Financing
Ontario Premier Doug Ford reaffirmed his support for the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, a proposed pipeline that would connect Alberta to Ontario's refining and petrochemical complex. Speaking in Calgary on September 28, Ford framed the project as essential to Canada's energy sovereignty and economic security.
The 3,300-kilometer pipeline, which would run from Hardisty, Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario, has the potential to move about 500,000 barrels of oil per day and expand to 800,000. Ford emphasized that the project would be 'distinctly Canadian,' with Canadian steel used in its construction and Canadian workers employed exclusively.
Ford acknowledged the challenges facing major infrastructure projects, including high-risk profiles that may deter private investment. To address this, he suggested that governments could provide 'patient capital' to support development. Ontario has already allocated $14 million to continue feasibility work on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
