Freeport-McMoRan's Copper Growth Plan Takes Shape Amid Electrification Boom
Freeport-McMoRan's CEO Kathleen Quirk outlined the company's growth plan at Morgan Stanley's 14th Annual Laguna Conference, focusing on copper production. The company is entering a new phase of expansion, driven by higher copper prices and the recovery of its Grasberg mine in Indonesia.
Freeport sees copper demand growing due to electrification, renewable power, and grid investment, while supply remains hard to bring online. Quirk highlighted three main growth drivers: the recovery of Grasberg, the Bagdad expansion in the US, and a leaching program that extracts copper from stockpiles.
The company is already producing 200 million pounds of copper per year through its leaching effort, with incremental operating costs below $1 per pound. Freeport aims to reach 800 million pounds within three to four years, which would be roughly the scale of a major new copper mine.
