Fuel Prices Surge to Record Highs Amid War in Iran

North County drivers are feeling the pinch of soaring fuel costs, with gas prices in California and across the country continuing to rise. The war in Iran has taken a dramatic turn over the past week, exacerbating global oil shocks that are colliding with the state's expensive fuel system.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in San Diego County is $6.08, while diesel is selling for $8.02 per gallon. California has the highest average price per gallon in the country for both gas and diesel, with prices nearly 50 cents higher than second-place Washington state.

Nationally, all-time diesel records were set Tuesday in Michigan ($6.27), Indiana, and Illinois ($6.22), and Wisconsin ($6.11). The nation's average price of gas has risen 17.2 cents per gallon over the past week to $4.25 as oil surged past $100 per barrel on Monday.

Patrick De Haan, head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy, warns that prices have nowhere to go but up, citing 'layers and layers of issues' in the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine conflict contributing to the price hike. Diesel is trading at about $220 per barrel, more than double the price of crude oil.
