G7 Oil Stock Release Offers Temporary Relief to Tight Fuel Markets

The G7 nations recently announced a plan to release 100 million barrels of oil stocks over four months, which included a significant diesel release within the first 20 days. This move led to a drop in crude oil prices and middle distillate cracks, as well as lower gasoline and diesel prices in the U.S. The U.S. crude oil benchmark, WTI, fell to around $90 per barrel, partly due to some states implementing a motor fuel tax holiday until the end of the year.

Analysts warn that this stock release is only a temporary fix for the tight fuel markets. The concern is that depleting existing stocks without sufficient supply to replenish them will leave the markets more vulnerable to future disruptions. The immediate price relief at the pump is likely to be short-lived unless normal fuel flows from the Middle East resume.

Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, noted that stock releases could provide temporary relief during peak demand periods. However, restoring refinery output and trade flows remains essential for a sustained move lower in Brent prices. This would require improving crude supply, recovering product exports, and reducing political and financial risks to shipping.

Meanwhile, China has once again halted fuel exports to keep supply for its domestic market, and Russia extended its ban on exports of diesel, marine fuel, and gasoil until October 31. Fuel supply from the Middle East remains constrained despite reports of pre-war flow levels through the Strait of Hormuz. Until these underlying issues are addressed, diesel and other oil stock releases will remain a transitory solution.
