Georgia Power Breaks Ground on Plant Bowen Expansion
Georgia Power has broken ground on an expansion project at Plant Bowen in Euharlee, Georgia. The new addition includes two natural gas combined-cycle units with a total capacity of approximately 1,500 megawatts and 500 megawatts of battery storage.
The project is expected to be operational within three to four years and aims to improve electricity reliability for the region. Large customers, including data centers, are signing long-term contracts with Georgia Power to secure power at a fixed rate, protecting residential ratepayers from potential price fluctuations.
Georgia Power CEO Kim Greene emphasized that these contracts serve as a financial backstop for residential ratepayers, ensuring they do not bear the burden of serving new data centers. Deputy Energy Secretary James Danly tied the project to a $26.5 billion federal loan package for Southern Company, stating it is the largest non-emergency energy loan of its kind.
