Germany Downplays Gas Storage Worries Despite Winter Supply Fears
The German government is trying to calm concerns over low gas storage levels as winter approaches. According to data, German storage sites stood at 50.19% full on Friday, which is below typical levels for this time of year and beneath the European average of 61.82%. This has sparked worries that Europe's largest economy could face tighter supplies if winter proves severe or disruptions occur.
The Economic Affairs and Energy Ministry acknowledged the shortfall but maintained that 'based on current information, a gas shortage is not expected this coming winter.' Officials urged against focusing on any single number, saying security of supply depends on the interaction of storage, pipeline imports, LNG, infrastructure, and demand.
However, the government signaled it stands ready to step in if conditions deteriorate. 'If key risk factors for security of supply worsen significantly, the state can and will respond,' the ministry said.
