Germany's Gas Storage Facilities Empty, Leaving Country Vulnerable to Disruptions
Germany's gas storage facilities are at an all-time low, leaving the country vulnerable to disruptions in natural gas supply. The current reserves stand at just 51%, with only a few weeks left before winter sets in.
The shortfall is expected to put pressure on German consumers and businesses, who may be asked to shoulder billions of euros in additional energy costs. According to an estimate by Thorsten Storck, an expert at Verivox, wholesale prices could rise by up to €3.8 billion next year if supply issues persist.
The German government is facing mounting pressure from industry leaders and experts to take action to address the crisis. Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil has warned that Economy Minister Katherina Reiche will be held accountable if supply issues arise.
