Global Gas Turbine Boom Tests Nigeria's Domestic Supply
The global demand for gas-fired power plants is surging, with record orders of 38GW in the second quarter, according to JP Morgan. This boom presents an opportunity for Nigeria's gas industry, but also risks exacerbating existing supply constraints at home.
Nigeria has one of the world's largest natural gas reserves, yet its power plants struggle to secure sufficient supplies. Gas suppliers are increasingly bearing the financial burden of supplying the electricity market without being paid promptly, with N81.67 billion of gas invoices remaining unpaid in the first five months of 2026.
The international market is preparing for a significant expansion of gas-fired generation, driven by rising demand from data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Siemens Energy, General Electric, and Mitsubishi Power are among the companies accounting for major turbine orders.
