Global Wheat Prices Soar 40% Amid Ongoing Russia-Ukraine War
Global wheat prices have skyrocketed by 40% since June lows, reaching a three-year high in Chicago futures. The rise is attributed to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which has disrupted grain shipments from the Black Sea region.
Major wheat importers in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have faced difficulties in securing supplies due to attacks on ships and port infrastructure. As a result, physical prices from alternative exporters have skyrocketed, threatening to trigger a new wave of food inflation for vulnerable consumers.
Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, warned that the Black Sea is a vital region for grain transportation, and if buyers cannot export grain from there, they will have to seek supplies elsewhere, pushing prices even higher.
