Gold Holds Steady as Treasury Yields Hit 24-Year Highs
Gold prices showed remarkable resilience on Tuesday, slipping just 0.3% to $4,128.69 an ounce despite 10- and 30-year Treasury yields hitting 24-year highs. The 10-year yield closed at 5.31% on October 5, while the 30-year yield also reached its highest level in over two decades. The US dollar index (DXY) hovered near 101.15, close to an eight-week high, adding to the pressure on gold. However, the decline in gold was minimal compared to other precious metals, with silver, platinum, and palladium experiencing steeper drops.
The recent decline in gold prices follows a two-week slide, with spot gold falling from $4,282.98 on September 25. Analysts attribute the losses to rate-hike bets and a stronger dollar. Yet, the market appears to be balancing rate pressure against safe-haven and structural demand, suggesting that the recent pullback may not signal a deeper correction.
Spot gold hit a record high near $5,594.82 in late January, but it has since retreated. The decline is seen more as profit-taking after a strong rally rather than a collapse in demand. The metal still trades well above pre-2025 levels, indicating that it has only surrendered part of its historic run.
The Federal Reserve's pricing and softer jobs data add complexity to the outlook. The September jobs report was weaker than expected, but the market still sees a December rate hike as nearly certain. The ISM services input prices hit their highest in over four years, suggesting inflation could remain elevated into 2027. This dual dynamic of softening jobs and sticky inflation explains why rate relief for gold is unlikely to arrive quickly.
Analysts point to geopolitical risks, particularly in the Middle East, and shifts in US rate expectations as potential catalysts for a breakout in gold prices. Kyle Rodda of Capital.com highlights the importance of developments around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which could impact safe-haven demand and oil-linked inflation risk. The next US inflation and jobs prints, along with shifts in CME FedWatch odds, will be crucial in determining gold's near-term trajectory.
