Gold Market Cautious Optimism Ahead of India's Festive Season
The Indian gold market is showing signs of cautious optimism as the festive and wedding seasons approach. Despite higher prices weighing on gold jewelry demand, investment purchases remain steady. In fact, large retailers have reported stronger demand for gold products.
The World Gold Council notes that India's gold imports fell by 45 percent in August, with volumes estimated at between 15 and 20 tonnes. This suggests existing domestic supply remains sufficient to meet expected demand.
Investment demand has remained steady, although there appears to be a shift from physical to digital gold purchases. Digital gold purchases held steady from June to August, averaging around ₹25 billion ($262 million) per month, significantly higher year-on-year with August digital gold purchases rising by 110 percent.
