Gold Mining Sector Surges 20% as Higher Metal Prices Fuel Profits
The gold mining sector experienced a significant surge in August, with equities gaining over 20% in just one week. The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) and its junior counterpart, GDXJ, rose by 21.09% and 22.42%, respectively, while the Global X Copper Miners ETF lagged behind at 12%. This price increase had a substantial impact on major gold producers in Mexico, including Fresnillo, Agnico Eagle Mines, Newmont, and Barrick Mining.
The increased revenue for these companies was largely due to the higher metal prices, which more than doubled their profits despite output declines. For example, Fresnillo's first-half profit tripled to $1.46 billion, while Grupo México lifted its net profit by 90.9% to $2.09 billion.
However, the increased cash flow has not been invested in new capacity or exploration but rather in sustaining capital, with maintenance and equipment upgrades taking precedence. The lack of new concession titles being issued and unpublished regulations for the 2023 Mining Law reform are contributing factors to this approach.
