Gold Prices Plummet Amid Shifts in Interest Rates
Gold prices plummeted by $152.80 an ounce in a single session, marking its steepest decline in over two months. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEARCA:GLD) fell 3.94% to close at $377.92, with no comparable one-day drop since July 20.
The current price leaves the fund about 26% below its 52-week high of $509.70. However, if investors held GLD for a year ago, they would still be ahead by 8.99%, and for five years, the gain is 134.26%, even after this week's losses.
The drop in gold prices reflects shifts in interest rates and macroeconomic conditions rather than any inherent issue with gold itself. The fund's mechanics are straightforward: GLD simply holds bullion and tracks its price, making it a proxy for the metal.
