Gold Prices Plummet Below $4,600 Ahead of Jackson Hole Speech
Gold prices have retreated below $4,600 ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium. The XAU/USD price fell by approximately 0.5% on Friday, August 28, to around $4,580 per ounce.
The decline in gold prices comes after a sharp rally earlier this week, which saw the metal approach a fresh multi-month high near $4,700. However, traders took profits and became increasingly cautious ahead of Warsh's speech, while higher Treasury yields continued to increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold.
The rise in bond yields is becoming a global story rather than purely a US problem, with Tokyo's core consumer inflation accelerating for a third consecutive month in August. The Bank of Japan kept its policy rate unchanged at 1.0% in July and will continue to monitor inflation developments when making future decisions.
