Gold Prices Soar to $4,440 as Geopolitical Uncertainty Bites
Gold prices have surged in recent weeks, reaching $4,440 per ounce in early August. This significant increase is attributed to several factors, including ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and the conflict between the US and Iran.
The situation around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for energy raw material transportation, has investors seeking safe-haven assets like gold.
Uncertainty surrounding the US economy and the Federal Reserve's monetary policy is also contributing to the rise in gold prices. Expectations of lower interest rates are positive for gold as they reduce the costs associated with holding the precious metal.
The US bond market has been influencing gold prices, particularly with the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds falling since February. However, this can be a drag on gold if yields continue to rise and investors obtain attractive returns through government bonds.
Central banks remain significant buyers of gold, purchasing 289 tonnes in net terms during the second quarter, a 62% increase year-on-year. This is driven by efforts to diversify foreign exchange reserves and reduce dependence on traditional reserve assets, particularly the US dollar.
