Gold Prices Tumble Amid Inflation Fears and Rate Hike Bets
Gold prices are trending lower this week due to rising energy costs and inflation concerns. The Federal Reserve's potential for further interest rate hikes is also weighing on bullion, as higher borrowing costs typically negatively impact gold. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $4,283.34 an ounce at 10:56 a.m. in Singapore.
The recent spike in oil prices has led to increased inflation fears, causing bond yields to rise. The yield on 30-year US bonds hit nearly 5.5%, the highest in over two decades. Christopher Wong of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp notes that this is a 'difficult backdrop' for gold.
Despite near-term headwinds, many investors are still betting on gold to grind higher as it regains its traditional value as a portfolio hedge.
