Gold Volatility Impacts Betashares QAU ETF
Gold prices continued their recent volatility on Friday night, extending a choppy stretch that included a sharp decline earlier in the week. The Betashares currency-hedged gold bullion fund (ASX:QAU) faced a softer lead this morning as a result. The retreat in gold prices came alongside lower silver, copper, and base metals prices, driven by a firm US dollar and long-dated Treasury yields near multi-decade highs.
The Betashares Gold Bullion Currency Hedged ETF (QAU) provides Australian investors with exposure to physical gold bullion while hedging the currency risk. This means returns largely track the US dollar price of gold, removing the impact of swings in the AUD/USD exchange rate. The hedging cost depends on the interest rate gap between Australia and the US, which currently favors hedged exposures due to higher Australian rates.
Despite recent softness, gold remains far above its year-start levels in US dollar terms. Safe-haven demand for gold persists amid elevated geopolitical risks, including tensions involving Iran and crude oil markets. Central bank demand for gold also remains a key factor.
Looking ahead, US consumer and producer price data for September will be a significant catalyst. A hotter-than-expected inflation print could push real yields higher, adding pressure on gold. Conversely, signs of a cooling labor market with contained inflation could support the case for the Federal Reserve to pause rate hikes, potentially easing some pressure on gold.
