Gold's 14-Year High Masks Bigger Gains in Mining Stocks
Gold prices have reached a 14-year high since 2023, breaking the price ceiling. However, investors may be missing out on bigger gains by focusing solely on physical gold or gold ETFs.
A recent whitepaper from Rational Equity Asset Management suggests that gold mining stocks are where the real profits lie. The report, titled 'Beyond Bullion: Why the miners are the more profitable way to own gold's bull run,' argues that major miners like Newmont and Kinross have clean balance sheets, with billions in net cash and some smaller producers being debt-free.
According to the whitepaper, investing ₹1 lakh in physical gold would grow to approximately ₹2.29 lakh since 2023. The same amount invested in a gold ETF would reach around ₹2.53 lakh. But invested in gold mining stocks, it became nearly triple at ₹3.77 lakh.
The report also notes that Indian investors are overwhelmingly holding onto physical gold or investing in ETFs, with mining equities barely registering as a category. Despite record gold prices, miners are trading below their decade-average valuations, indicating an opportunity for gains.
