Grain and Cattle Markets Surge on Harvest Delays and Strong Demand

Grain markets surged Tuesday, with all three major commodities, corn, soybeans, and wheat, posting significant gains. December corn futures climbed about 11 cents to settle at $5.08 a bushel, driven by short covering, bargain buying, and a weaker U.S. dollar. Harvest delays in Iowa due to heavy rains also contributed to the rally. Soybeans led the gains, with November futures rising 20 to 24 cents, pushing prices back above $13 per bushel. Slower harvest progress, fresh export demand, and developments in Brazil supported soybeans, while the USDA reported another soybean sale to an unknown destination.

Wheat futures also saw double-digit gains, supported by concerns over Black Sea supply, slower U.S. winter wheat planting, and stronger international demand. Ukrainian grain exports remain significantly below year-ago levels, adding to the market's bullish sentiment. Overall, the grain markets experienced a strong risk-on day, with all commodities closing well above early-session expectations.

In the livestock market, cattle futures exploded higher Tuesday, reversing the previous day's weakness. Live cattle futures rose roughly $4 to $5, while feeder cattle surged around $8 to $9. The rally was fueled by tight cattle supplies and sharply higher boxed beef values, which jumped more than $4 to above $378. Feeders posted the biggest move, benefiting from renewed cattle-market buying and speculative momentum despite higher corn prices. Cash cattle trade remained quiet early in the week, leaving futures traders to anticipate later bids.

Lean hogs, however, were much quieter. Hog futures have been attempting to stabilize after reaching contract lows, with short covering providing some support. The market continues to face concerns over cash hog demand and pork values. The clear story Tuesday was cattle, with both live and feeder contracts sharply higher.
