Grain Shortages Fuel 40% Wheat Price Surge Amid Ukraine Conflict
Disruptions to grain shipments from Russia and Ukraine due to ongoing conflict in Ukraine have driven up wheat prices globally. Benchmark prices on the Chicago exchange have surged by 40% since June, reaching a three-and-a-half-year high.
Major importers in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are struggling to restock after attacks on ships and port infrastructure halted cargo movement in July. Local stockpiles have dwindled, with particularly critical levels in Asia, which is heavily dependent on imports.
Ole Hansen from Saxo Bank notes that the Black Sea region is crucial for grain transport; if buyers can't source grain there, they'll look elsewhere, driving prices up further. Some importers are already seeking alternatives, but others indicate their current stocks will last until November or the end of the year.
