Green Transition Hits Roadblock as Europe Turns to Fossil Fuels
The UK and Europe are turning to gas, oil, and nuclear energy in response to high costs, grid bottlenecks, and energy security concerns. This shift marks a departure from the rapid green transition model that has been touted as the solution to climate change.
The British government is currently deciding on two contentious energy projects: the Jackdaw natural gas field and the Rosebank oil field in the North Sea. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has signaled a pragmatic approach, stating that his government will treat North Sea oil and natural gas 'pragmatically.'
This move does not mean that Britain is abandoning its commitment to Net Zero or renewable energy. In fact, electricity generation from renewable sources set a new record in 2026, and investments continue. However, the emphasis has shifted from relying on intermittent generation without sufficient infrastructure to a more balanced approach.
