Guyana's Oil Boom Drives Unprecedented Economic Growth
Oil production in Guyana has surged to nearly one million barrels per day (bpd), with the country on track to surpass this milestone by the end of the year. According to Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat, Guyana's oil production currently exceeds 900,000 bpd.
The rapid growth of the sector has transformed Guyana's economy, driving GDP growth rates as high as 63.3 percent in 2022 and 43.6 percent in 2024. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Guyana to achieve a 20.8 percent GDP growth rate in 2026, driven by an anticipated 17.9 percent increase in oil production.
Guyana's oil revenues are projected to reach $6.50 billion this year, with the government planning to monetize its gas resources and expand economic benefits. Upcoming developments such as the $12.7 billion Uaru project are expected to significantly boost production and contribute to Guyana's GDP reaching between $50 billion and $69 billion by 2030.
However, not everyone is optimistic about Guyana's oil wealth. Economist Thomas Singh has criticized the country's 14.5 percent take from Exxon's operations as a 'terribly bad deal' compared to other countries. Alistair Routledge, who leads Exxon's Guyana operations, countered that an escalation mechanism is in place to allow Guyana's proceeds to rise.
