Hong Kong Gold Futures Smash Delivery Record Amid Asian Infrastructure Buildout
The Hong Kong gold futures market has set a new record for physical delivery in 2026, with 145 kilograms of gold delivered on August 19. This surpasses the previous record of 63 kg set in December 2018, and marks a significant milestone for the market.
The increase in physical delivery is largely due to structural policy changes implemented by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX), which have revitalized the contract that had been dormant. The three key mechanisms introduced include fee waivers as an entry-cost catalyst, designated liquidity provider programs, and active trader reward structures.
These policies have attracted both institutional and high-frequency participants, resulting in a compounding effect that has driven up trading volume. However, it remains to be seen whether the market will sustain itself beyond the incentive period, which expires on June 30, 2027.
