Hormuz Agreement Stuck in Limbo as Oil Prices Ignore Reality
Despite optimism from US President Trump, the situation on the Strait of Hormuz remains uncertain. A proposed agreement between Iran and Oman to allow shipping lanes has yet to be finalized, with ship traffic at a near standstill since August 3. Single-digit daily averages of vessels crossing the strait have been reported, excluding shadow fleet and dark transits.
The Omani corridor was previously used by some vessels to avoid potential conflict, but even this route has seen multiple incidents, including projectiles being fired at ships.
A new bill in Iran aims to bar US and Israeli vessels from using the agreed-upon transit route with Oman, with a fine of up to 20% of cargo value for unauthorized or non-compliant transits.
WTI crude oil prices have continued to rise today, but are still poised to end the week lower by nearly 10%, marking back-to-back weekly declines. Traders appear to be buying into Trump's optimism rather than focusing on the reality of the situation.
