Hormuz Risk Premium Swells Amid Fragile Oil Market Support

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for about 20% of global oil supply, has seen oil markets reprice risk amid fragile support. According to BNY's analysis, traders are reassessing the potential for a closure or restriction of the Strait, reflecting heightened geopolitical tensions in the region.

The market is beginning to factor in a higher probability of disruption, but physical supply has not yet tightened, creating a delicate balance where any escalation could trigger a sharp rally. However, any de-escalation could quickly erase the premium.

Fragile support stems from several factors, including comfortable global oil inventories and OPEC+ spare capacity that could offset any loss of Hormuz-related supply. Additionally, demand growth has been weaker than expected, particularly in major economies like China, dampening the need for additional barrels.
