Hormuz Under Siege: Iran-Linked Tanker Attacks Escalate Maritime Tensions

Two oil tankers were attacked in the last 48 hours near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade. According to the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), the incidents occurred on the Burgan and another unidentified tanker, both of which reported security issues while transiting the area.

The JMIC attributed the attacks to Iranian forces' continued surveillance and harassment of shipping vessels, with the aim of maintaining a visible military presence along critical lanes. This has resulted in commercial traffic through the Strait remaining far below normal levels.

US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine acknowledged the threat, stating that the incidents underscore the ongoing risk to ships approaching or leaving the world's most important oil chokepoint.
