Houthi Attacks Reach Riyadh's Airport Fuel Depot
The Saudi capital of Riyadh came under attack early Saturday morning as air-raid alerts sounded and explosions were heard, followed by a large plume of black smoke rising from a fuel storage depot at King Khalid International Airport. This marks the first time Houthi attacks have visibly affected the Saudi capital since fighting with the Iran-backed group intensified in July.
The incident has led to major flight disruptions at Riyadh's main airport, and while officials have not yet confirmed the source of the threat or the extent of the damage, analysts note that the immediate physical impact on crude production or exports appears limited. Brent crude closed Friday around $104 per barrel after falling for a third consecutive session.
The Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure have continued to escalate in recent weeks, with claimed strikes on Najran Airport and an Aramco facility in southern Saudi Arabia. The UN Security Council has condemned the continued Houthi attacks on Saudi civilian and energy infrastructure, while Riyadh has vowed to respond firmly.
