Houthi-Saudi Conflict Threatens Türkiye's African Interests
Türkiye is taking a closer look at the escalating conflict between Yemen's Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia, as the situation threatens to draw Ankara into a confrontation.
The Houthis have declared a complete naval blockade on Saudi Arabia and intensified missile and drone attacks on Saudi oil tankers. They have also gained control of large stretches of the Red Sea coast, including the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Türkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Saudi Arabia may have unmet military needs, and that Türkiye would consider how to support it under a trilateral defence pact with Pakistan. However, Ankara has yet to ratify the pact, expected in October, and Riyadh has not formally requested help.
Analysts warn that a confrontation could disrupt the Red Sea routes that sustain Türkiye's military and energy ambitions in Africa. The Bab al-Mandeb Strait is a gateway to China, India, and East Africa, and the direct line between Ankara and Mogadishu would be affected by any conflict.
